Video studios for rent in Singapore

Video studios by the hour: the ceiling height, the quiet and the power a shoot needs, without owning any of it.

Cyc, dressed set or empty box

Three very different rooms get called a video studio. A cyclorama studio gives you a coved white wall for keying and full-body movement. A dressed set (a mock apartment, a kitchen, a bookshelf wall) saves you an art department but locks you into one look. An empty box with blackout and a lighting grid is the flexible option and the one that needs the most kit brought in. Only a minority of what is tagged for videography here is a purpose-built photo or video studio; a large share is dance and multi-purpose rooms that film well because they are big, bright and empty. Decide which of the three you need before you sort by price, because the cheapest result will almost always be the third.

Ceiling height decides more than floor area

Floor area gets quoted; ceiling height is what limits the shot. You need clearance for a light above the frame, a boom out of shot, and anything angled up at a standing subject. A 700 sqft room with a low ceiling and a dropped grid of services is harder to light than a smaller room with four metres clear. Height is on the listing where the host has measured it. Where it isn't, read the photos: the air-con trunking and the sprinkler heads, not the slab, are your real ceiling.

Sound is what you cannot fix later

Most of this inventory sits on central floors around Chinatown, Orchard, Bugis, Dhoby Ghaut and Outram Park, which is excellent for a call time and poor for a clean audio track. Traffic, a compressor, the class next door and the studio's own air-conditioning are the four usual offenders, and the last one is the trap: a host who happily lets you switch it off is telling you the room is unbearable twenty minutes later. If dialogue matters, ask what the room sounds like with the aircon off and search the reviews for the word noise. Otherwise, rent for picture and record sound separately.

Power, load-in and the day rate

Continuous lights and a couple of monitors find the limit of a domestic circuit faster than people expect, so count the outlets and ask which circuits they sit on before planning a heavy lighting setup. Load-in matters as much: central buildings have shared lifts and narrow loading windows, and a stand case does not travel well in a passenger lift with six other people in it. On price, videography sits in the same band as photography (from around twenty dollars an hour to a hundred and eighty, typically near sixty), but almost no filming day is short. By the time you have loaded in, lit, shot and struck, the half-day or day rate has already won.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rent a video studio in Singapore?

Hourly rates run from about twenty dollars for a small multi-purpose room to a hundred and eighty or more for a large studio with a cyclorama and a grid, with the typical space near sixty. Filming days almost always work out cheaper on a half-day or day rate.

What ceiling height do I need for filming?

Enough to get a key light above the frame line and a boom out of shot, which for standing subjects means well over three metres of clear height rather than slab height. Check where the air-con trunking and sprinklers run, because that is the real ceiling.

Can I record clean audio in a rented studio?

In some, yes. Most rooms here sit on central floors and pick up traffic and air-conditioning, and few are acoustically treated. Ask the host how the room sounds with the aircon switched off, and read the reviews before committing to recording dialogue live.

Do video studios include lights and a cyclorama?

It varies per space. A cyclorama is a specification you filter for, and lighting is sometimes in the rate and sometimes a paid add-on. Both are on the listing, and they are the main reason two similar-looking studios differ sharply in price.

Can I bring a full crew, talent and a client?

Yes, up to the space's max pax, which counts everyone in the room including talent and clients. Studios here commonly allow groups in the teens, with the larger end taking around fifty.

Do I need a permit to film in a rented studio?

Not for filming inside the space you have booked. Anything shot in the corridors, the lift lobby or the street outside is the building's call rather than the host's, so raise it in advance if your shot list leaves the unit.
